I find the discussions about work relationships one sided more
veering towards an employee's point of view. Maybe it is time to look at
things from a business owner's vantage point. The person who started
the company has taken all the chances, absorbed the stresses, and more
times than not made many sacrifices. Probably just staring out was chief
cook and bottle washer in a matter of speaking, doing multiple jobs in
order to grow from modest roots. Hiring employees was a further risk,
and those who don't take their job seriously became serious liabilities.
Maybe that sounds cold but employees can walk away clear and free of
obligation, not as easy for business owner.
I'm not taking a stand here right or wrong just bringing some facts. The Laws for employers hiring people in certain industries has a cost attached. In the restaurant industry servers need certifications like smart serve to work, and the car industry sales people need licensing. The law states that all staff take the work safety course at the owner's expense. Most employees are not aware that businesses submit an additional portion of employee benefits to the government. Whatever someone sees as deduction at source on their checks, the employer is responsible to pay a percentage for them too. The Government is like the mob making business owners pay and pay, even if the economy is not good all business taxes need to be paid no break period. If not they send in their tax enforcers to make sure all is right no skimming off the top. If they catch something just like mob without the violence, they will pay dearly in penalties and interest. We all work for the government business owners and employee.
Business people based their finances on many things, but operational costs really give the picture. As an example if they estimate sales to be $10,000, and used 20% for labor costs that would $2000. However in bad economy if those estimated sales were only $7000 this mean 20% is $1400. To stay in business not losing money they need to reduce hours or layoff people. I know that is not what an employee wants to hear, but many small to medium businesses are in that situation. Rather than laying-off people or cutting jobs they go into debt hoping for a turnaround. Some employees not getting raises need to understand they're lucky to keep the job!
There are definitely cheap employers out there taking advantage of their workers, but for the most part many are just trying to stay afloat. Most are hoping their governmental mob bosses will do something with all the monetary tributes kicked-up, like starting-up a positive economy again. Next time you're wondering about that well deserved raise, maybe ask the real boss our wonderful esteemed Prime Minister.
